Each iSTAR device has three WiFi modes, these are located within Settings>Wifi Settings
The three modes are as follows:
AP mode (access-point mode)
iSTAR connects to an existing WiFi network within range. A user may then communicate with iSTAR using any suitable device registered on the same network.
- Browse to Settings>Wifi Settings, ensure AP mode selected
- Touch option for Network
- Touch option for SSID and allow iSTAR to scan for nearby wireless networks
- Once iSTAR has finished scanning, touch SSID to scroll through available networks, highlighting your desired one
- Touch Password and key in password for your chosen network, then press OK
- Press back (⇐) button to return to the main settings screen
- When Wifi icon in the top bar turns green, iSTAR is connected to the network
- Browse back to Settings>WiFi Settings, and note the ID (IP address) shown
- With any other compatible device connected to the same network, enter this ID into your browser to access iSTAR Remote, which can be used to send basic commands to iSTAR
adhoc mode
iSTAR outputs a WiFi signal, allowing another device to connect to it on a one-to-one basis and operate iSTAR via remote control.
Note that a limitation of the Android operating system means that this mode will not work with Android devices, they will not see the iSTAR's signal. Use "Create Network" below instead.
- Browse to Settings>Wifi Settings, ensure adhoc mode selected
- Touch option for IP Settings, note the IP address shown
- Press back (⇐) button three times to return to the main menu
- Enable Wifi on your other compatible device and allow it to scan for available networks
- Select the wireless network generated by iSTAR, it will be named iSTAR_XXXX where XXXX is the last four digits of the iSTAR serial number
- When prompted, enter the password iSTAR and wait for the two devices to establish a wireless connection. Your other device will confirm when this is done - note that a warning that there is no internet access is perfectly normal
- Open a browser window on your controlling device and browse to the IP address noted previously
Create Network
iSTAR generates and outputs a WiFi signal, to which multiple WiFi enabled devices can connect to simultaneously in order to send commands.
- Browse to Settings>Wifi Settings, ensure Create Network selected
- Touch option for IP Settings, note the IP address shown
- Press back (⇐) button twice to return to the main menu
- Enable Wifi on your other compatible device and allow it to scan for available networks
- Select the wireless network generated by iSTAR, it will be named iSTAR_XXXX where XXXX is the last four digits of the iSTAR serial number
- Wait for the two devices to establish a wireless connection. Your controlling device will confirm when this is done - note that a warning that there is no internet access is perfectly normal
- Open a browser window on your controlling device and browse to the IP address noted previously
Additional Useful Tips
- Firmware: this information is relative to firmware v2.3.10 - if you aren't already using this, update your unit here.
- Can't switch between the three Wifi modes?: This could indicate a hardware fault - raise a support ticket here and our team will be happy to assist.
- Unit doesn't connect to network in AP mode (Wifi icon doesn't turn green)?: Make sure that you've entered the correct password for the specified network first. If this isn't the cause, try powering the unit off and then on again, this will re-initialise the Wifi module.
- Note that adhoc mode was effectively superseded by Create Network mode, they work almost exactly the same way. As such, there's no need to use adhoc mode at any point, use Create Network instead.
